Cal Poly Racing is the largest student chapter of SAE International in California. Over 150 active members contribute to designing, manufacturing, and testing three innovative racing vehicles. Months of hard work culminate at SAE’s Collegiate Design Series (CDS) competitions. These international competitions challenge us to apply our skills outside of the classroom as part of a project that closely imitates industry practices. Cal Poly Racing is the only California team to field vehicles in all three of the major CDS competitions: Formula SAE, Formula SAE Electric, and Baja SAE.

Formula SAE

Formula SAE is the perfect team for students who love driving fast and being silly.  We function very similarly to an extended family; always meeting new people you didn't know existed, and loving every chance we have to get together and be kids at heart.

Meetings are Tuesdays from 11am-12pm in room 180-113

Baja SAE

Prerequisites to joining the Baja SAE team include:  fascination with off-roading vehicles, fondness of outdoors, and love of dirt.  But don't let our crazy shenanigans intimidate you.  We are actually a solid group of friendly students who just want to have fun... in the mud.

Meetings are Tuesdays from 11am-12pm in room 192-114

Business Team

The Business team is home to students of a wide variety of majors.  We welcome all of those who have a passion for cars, but lack the skill set to actually build them.  Some of our projects include promotional material, partnership outreach, and team apparel.

Meetings are Mondays from 6-7pm in room 197-106

Who drives the car?

Being a driver is a very coveted position on the team, so we can't just let everyone who expresses interest drive the car.  However, this doesn't mean you have a 0% chance of ever sitting behind a steering wheel.  We like to reward our members who consistently work hard and do their absolute best to further the team's success.  If you put in the hours, chances are you will have the opportunity to drive at a testing day.

Do I have to join in fall?

No!  Of course you're not limited to only joining in the fall!  We understand that schedules can be tricky; some quarters you'll have a lot of time to commit to the team, while others you'll be swamped with demanding professors.  At whatever time of the year you can commit time to us, we appreciate it and would love to have you!

How many hours a week do I have to commit to the club?

Tricky question.  You should really be asking is "How many hours a week am I willing to commit to the club?"  We don't take attendance and we can't force you to come out to every single design or work night.  Your participation is totally up to your schedule.  How much do you value this club, this community, and this opportunity to gain unique experiences.  Ask anyone and they can tell you that benefits you reap from the program directly correlates with the number of hours you put in.  Cal Poly Racing on your resume can help you if you have spent time learning design, learning manufacturing, learning how a car works, learning how to compromise, learning practical applications to industry.  However, having Cal Poly Racing on your resume can also hurt you if you haven't dedicated enough hours to the club to actually understand what's going on.  (Trust us.  Recruiters can tell!)  Here's a vague weekly schedule, do what you will:

General Meetings |  once a week, 1 hr
Design Nights | [Fall Qtr] 2-3 times a week, 5 hrs per night
Work Nights | [Winter Qtr] 2-3 times a week, 5 hrs per night
Saturday/Sunday Work Days | 9am-midnight
Testing Days | varies; however long it takes us!

Do I have to pay a membership fee?  If so, what are the benefits?

Our membership fee is $40.  It may seem like a lot but here are some perks:

  • T-Shirt
T-shirts are pretty self-explanatory.  They look awesome, they make you look awesome, you get to be part of an awesome family.  In addition, you must have the current year's shirt to be in our team photos, which means you must be a member to get a shirt.
  • Headshots
If you've checked out our media, you'll notice that we have an awesome Business team full of very capable photographers.  Each quarter we set up a day to take headshots of members who so desire.  These look great on your LinkedIn profile (or Facebook or whatever you wish to place it on).
  • Resume book
Often times our partners will request access to our book of resumes.  We offer members the opportunity to submit their resumes to the book that we print, bind, and send out to recruiters.  (Think companies like Tesla, SpaceX, etc)
  • Banquet
    It's fun!  We promise.
